Not surprised by Hague's shameful relationship

Friday 14 October 2011 Printable  Email That William Hague should welcome, with open arms, a war criminal to this country should not surprise readers of our paper.

I am of course talking about Israeli government minister Tzipi Livni who visited our shores recently.

As a group of people tried to obtain an arrest warrant for Livni, Hague rushed through a diplomatic immunity certificate for the Israeli cabinet minister.

This ensured that if an arrest warrant was granted, on grounds of war crimes, Livni would not have been arrested.

Hague called the attempt to have his visitor arrested a shameful use of the British legal system.

It is really the behaviour of Hague and our own government that was shameful in this episode. Livni is an advocate of collective punishment towards the Palestinian people, particularly with regard to Gaza.

She is also a supporter of the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied territories and the building of the aparteid wall, while also following a policy of separating the occupied territories into small easily controlled bantustans.

She fully advocates the isolation and blockade of Gaza and the ongoing humanitarian crises caused by this blockade.

To welcome such a person to this country is indeed shameful, but what else should we expect from Hague? A man who, by his actions over the Libyan intervention, should have his own arrest warrant pending.
