Monument Protest: Stop Bombing Libya!

On Monday evening, June 28th, 2011, Tyneside Stop the War
Coalition organised a protest at the Monument demanding an end to the bombing
of Libya. NATO's military effort, clearly and illegally designed to secure
regime change, is not going well and killing many people and destroying Libya's
infrasturcture. Its initial 90-day mandate ran out, and they are extending this
illegal war against Libya by another three months.

Brian Haw, Peace Campaigner, Born 1949 - Died 18 June 2011

Brian Haw, world renowned peace activist, has died. His
peace camp outside the British parliament throughout the ten years of the
"war on terror" was a beacon for anti-war campaigners across the
world.

Stop the bombing!
No military intervention in Libya!
A Public Meeting was held on May 9 2011 in
Newcastle
The attack on Libya was condemend by the meeting and the
mantra of the Western powers and NATO in bombing Libya in the name of
humanitarian support opposed a big a lie
Although the UN resolution speaks of saving lives and
bringing about a ceasefire the Anglo-French and US powers only speak about
regime change, rubbishing the attempts of the African Union to broker a
peaceful settlement and fanning the flames of the civil war whatever the cost
in lives and the destruction of Libya.
The meeting demanded that the Anglo-French-US bombardment
stops. A ceasefire and mediation are the only alternatives to their aim of
regime change which will plunge Libya into chaos and further bloodshed.

Emergency Protest End Britain's Involvement in Military
Aggression Against Libya!

Roger Nettleship, Alex Snowden and Tony Dowling Speaking
at the Protest
Around 30 people attended an emergency protest which was
organised by Tyneside Stop the War Coalition on Monday, March 21st at 5pm at
the Monument to protest against the military intervention of Britain and big
powers in Libya.
Roger Nettleship chairing and opening the protest said on
March 19th, the international gangsters France, Britain and the US committed an
act of war against Libya by launching over 100 missiles at Libya and seizing
the assets of the Bank of Libya abroad. He explained that, as with Iraq and
Afghanistan the war could not be legitimised under the UN charter even if being
"legalised" by a minority vote in the UN when the majority of nations
expressed their concerns at the action. He went on to say that Cameron was the
new Blair and this shows even more the need to fight for an anti-war government
in Britain that such a programme of the anti-war movement stood for peaceful
resolution of conflicts between nations and within nations and nothing could
justify the present attack on Libya and the pro-war consensus at Westminster.
Alex Snowden also speaking from Tyneside Stop the War
Coalition said military intervention was not the way to bring democracy. Not
through cruise missiles and B52s. What was crucial for the people of Libya is
their self determination and that they control their own destiny and not having
it taken away by the big western powers. It was hypocritical for Cameron, Obama
and Clinton and so on to claim that they support popular uprisings as they also
arm countries that suppress uprisings. He said look at history look at the
so-called humanitarian interventions in Iraq and in Afghanistan they have been
disastrous and the attack on Libya is not different if the big powers don't get
what they want through airstrikes we could well see a ground invasion.
Tony Dowling of Tyneside Stop the War Coalition spoke saying
that we have to be quite clear that our governments, the west, the United
Nations have never gone to intervene in a country to actually help the people.
They go in only for their own political and economic interests. He said that
are saying we have to cut millions from public services but they are sending
Cruise Missiles at a million pounds a time into Libya.
The chair then concluded by saying the aim of the anti-war
movement isn't just to oppose each war as they launch it but also to create the
conditions in Britain for an anti-war government that resolves international
conflicts and conflicts within countries in a peaceful way. Everyone was called
upon to oppose the military intervention in Libya and the Middle East.

Grey's Monument Protest in Newcastle Against the Criminal
Israeli Attack on Gaza Freedom Flottilla
After days in which the terrible
news that 20 peace activists have been killed by the Israeli navy with others
injured when they were part of the Freedom Flotilla taking aid to the beseiged
people of Gaza, several hundred people gathered at the Monument Newcastle on
Tuesday June 1st, 2010 to condemn the Israel's brutal killing of activists and
show solidarity with the Freedom Flotilla Mission. The emergency protest
organised by Tyneside Palestine Solidarity Campaign (TPS) and Tyneside Stop the
War Coalition (TSWC) was chaired by Alex Snowden of the TPS. The Protest lasted
an hour with speaker after speaker condemning the attack and also calling on
the British government to condemn Israel and end its continued support for this
criminal regime. Mahmoud Kurdi who had recently returned from the Viva
Palestina convoy last year said that this was a desperate act by Israel because
their criminal blockade was being broken and condemned world wide.
The protest ended with slogans in support of the Palestinan people and
condemning Israel and its Anglo US backers. A beautiful and moving Palestinian
poem was read out which had been written to condemn Israeli attack.
A Coach is now being organised for a National Emergency
Protest in London on Saturday June 5th at 2pm.

Protest Vigil Against Tony Blair

On Friday January 29th, a vigil took place at 5pm at
Newcastle Monument as part of protests in London and other cities to mark the
attendence of Tony Blair at the Chilcot enquiry. The convenor of TSWC gave and
introduction in which he pointed out that the people had given their verdict on
the Iraq war when 2 million demonstrated against the war in 2003. He said that
the only just conclusion of this enquiry can be that never again should a
government of Britain commit such war crimes against the people of the world,
that the troops should be brought home from Afghanistan and all foreign soil.
There should be an end to Britain's involvement in alliances with the US and
NATO and that Britain should have an anti-war government that respects the
sovereignty of other countries and resolves conflicts peacefully. He spoke of
the consequense of the decisions of Tony Blair and his cabinet which had not
been discussed as a crime against the peace in the enquiry. The convenor then
called on those present to put theirquestions to Tony Blair and the
protest vigil finished with the naming of the dead symbolic of the anti-war
movement.

24 October 2009: Landmark Afghanistan
demonstration
Stop the War's demonstration on 24 October 2009
brought the centre of London to a standstill. It was a landmark demonstration,
led by Lance Corporal Joe Glenton -- the first serving soldier in the British
army to join an anti-war march.
http://stopwar.org.uk/content/view/1561/1/
The march brought together at least 10,000
protestors from across Britain, calling for all British troops to be brought
home. Joining Joe Glenton at its head were ex-soldiers, a number of military
families, -- including Peter Brierley, who earlier this month refused to shake
Tony Blair's hand, saying it had "my son's blood on it" -- and
104-year-old peace campaigner Hetty Bower. The march took place on the day that
a new poll showed that almost two-thirds of people in Britain want all British
troops withdrawn from Afghanistan and 86 per cent believe the war is being
lost. Joe Glenton is facing court martial for refusing to return to
Afghanistan. He defied a direct order by his commanding officer to come on the
march, for which he may well face further charges.

Gaza massacre - Emergency Protest On
Saturday January 3
On Saturday, January 3rd 2009, hundreds of the
peoples took part in powerful protest in Newcastle against the aerial
bombardment and pending invasion by the Israeli zionists on Gaza. The
demonstration was chaired by Peter Burnett of the Palestinian Solidarity
Campaign. The demonstration at the Monument was addressed by speakers from
the platform and from the floor condeming the action of the Israeli government
and the complicity in these crimes by the British government who refuse to call
for a cessation of the offensive by Israel and clearly agree with the aims,
whilst trying to distance themselves from the massacre and destruction of Gaza.
Roger Nettleship addressed the Demonstration on behalf of the Stop the war
coalition. The statement is linked below. The demonstration called for a
continued building of the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign in the northeast.
Earlier in the day 170 people held a vigil at Durham Cathedral.
