email: nestopwar@yahoo.co.uk

If you email the local group you will be put on our email list and receive regular information about activities organised by Tyneside Stop the War Coalition, and the emails from the National Stop the War Coalition (to whom we are affiliated) will also be forwarded on to you.

The material you receive will be related to local and national events, and averages one a week. Your address won’t be passed on to any other organisation. You can unsubscribe at any time.

I’m afraid we can’t send information by normal post at the moment, but please ring either of the contact numbers whenever you want details of future meetings and events.

We have regular organising meetings, usually on the first Monday of the month (apart from bank holidays) – and public meetings, forums etc.

We have regular stalls on the street and at events – please contact us if you can help with running these.

We always support national demonstrations, usually by organising transport.

Tyneside Stop the War Coalition works with other peace groups in the region, including South Tyneside Stop the War Coalition and groups in Hexham and Whitley Bay.

Tyneside Stop the War Coalition Letter To Trade Unionists

May 29, 2008

Dear Trade union member

Whilst the anti-war movement has overwhelming support for the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and has a very high profile campaign which has put the anti-war agenda centre stage in the life of the county, the government, together with the other major parties and the mass media still promote a pro-war agenda. The conclusion that many of us have come to is that we cannot take the campaign forward without developing the participation of the working-class movement in directly demanding an end to pro-war government. The workers' movement has played a decisive role in the 20th century in defeating fascism and imperialist war: today yet again, with so many of its sons and daughters being used as cannon fodder by the Anglo-US alliance in these unjust wars it is both in its own interests and in the interests of all the peace-loving people of Britain and the world that the workers' movement takes a stand to stop these wars of occupation and bring the troops home. In particular we are asking for more trade union branches to involve their members in the local stop the war coalitions and to participate in their decision-making and activities.

National unions recognise the important work undertaken by the coalition, and all the major unions including UNITE, UNISON, RMT and UCU have affiliated to the national Stop the War Coalition, but this needs active participation of workplace branches and regional committees as well.  We ask your branch to consider affiliating and we would suggest an annual £50 affiliation fee from branches to strengthen the finances of the local coalition on Tyneside. We would also encourage branches to nominate those who wish to participate in the activities of the coalition to attend meetings as delegates from their branch.

As a first step we suggest inviting a speaker from the Tyneside Stop the War Coalition, or other coalition affiliates in the area, to speak at a branch meeting so that they can fully inform you of the history and present activities of the local coalitions and how they are organised.

Fraternally
